OUR STORY
My mother was an educator and imparted her love for teaching to me when I was a child. As a teenager I tutored classmates in high school and went on to earn my masters degree in special education in 2003. I knew I had found my calling.
I began teaching in the Evanston Public School district 65 in 2004. I started moonlighting as a tutor preparing high school students for the ACT and SAT and coaching and mentoring middle school students on executive functioning and study skills.
I made a deep connection with one middle school boy and his family, helping him with organizational tasks and homework. By the time he was a senior he was a top student and gained admission to the Michigan University’s Ross School of Business. That family wanted to share their son’s success and my work with him with friends and family. That sponsorship launched my business, Effective Educators, which I have now been running fulltime since 2007.
Over the course of the last 18 years I have helped thousands of students hone their study skills and provided coaching and mentoring to develop organizational and academic abilities throughout the Chicagoland area. I also now work with young people from around the world. My students have earned admissions to the top universities in the U.S., including University of Illinois Engineering, MIT, Stanford, all of Ivies and all of the schools in the University of California System.
Now I work with my wife Kristine, who has a masters degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Tech school of Engineering and is a certified professional - 6 Sigma black belt and Lean leader out of our home office in Glenview around the corner from Loyola Academy. The seventh grade boy is now a 30 something family man with children of his. We are in contact and I consider him a friend.
My business continues to thrive. The day scores are released is my Christmas Day. As I write this last paragraph, scores from the September ACT will be posted starting at midnight. Sunset will also usher in the beginning of the Jewish New Year.
Please see my alum and testimonial wall for pictures of real families and students. The pages date back 18 years.
Best,
Matt
